Stroller Maintenance Guide for Dubai — Keep Your Bugaboo, Stokke, and UPPAbaby Running Smoothly

A well-maintained stroller lasts three to five years in Dubai's challenging environment. A neglected one starts developing problems within twelve months. The difference is a few minutes of basic maintenance every month.

This guide covers the maintenance schedule that keeps your premium stroller running smoothly in Dubai conditions.

Monthly: Wheel Cleaning

Dubai sand is the number one enemy of stroller wheels. Fine particles work into the wheel bearings and swivel mechanisms, causing increasing resistance, noise, and wobble.

Once a month, flip the stroller upside down and spin each wheel. It should spin freely for several seconds. If it stops quickly, the bearing has accumulated debris.

For swivel front wheels, check that the swivel action is smooth. If the wheel resists turning or feels gritty, the swivel bearing needs cleaning.

Clean wheel bearings by removing the wheel from the axle, wiping the axle and bearing surfaces with a damp cloth, removing any visible sand or debris, drying completely, and applying a small drop of silicone lubricant to the axle before reinserting the wheel.

For sealed bearings that cannot be opened, spray a small amount of silicone lubricant into the bearing seal edge and spin the wheel to distribute it.

Monthly: Folding Mechanism Check

Open and close the stroller several times. The action should be smooth with a definite click into locked position. If you notice increasing stiffness, the joints need attention before they seize completely.

Apply a silicone-based lubricant spray to all visible pivot points in the folding mechanism. Wipe away excess. Open and close several times to work the lubricant into the joints.

Do not use WD-40 or oil-based lubricants. They attract and bind sand particles, making the problem worse long-term. Silicone spray does not attract dust.

Every Three Months: Fabric Inspection

Inspect all fabric panels for early signs of wear. Check seam stitching for any threads that are loosening or breaking. Check stress points where fabric wraps around frame tubes for thin spots or fraying. Check Velcro attachments for reduced grip.

Early seam repair — re-stitching a few centimeters of loose thread — takes minutes and prevents the seam from fully opening. Once a seam fully separates under load, the fabric often tears at the seam line, making repair more complex.

Clean fabric panels with a damp cloth and mild soap monthly. For stubborn stains, most stroller fabrics can be spot-cleaned with a gentle fabric cleaner. Check your stroller's manual for specific fabric care instructions.

Every Three Months: Brake Check

Test the parking brake on a slight incline. The stroller should not roll when the brake is engaged. If it moves even slightly, the brake needs adjustment.

Most stroller brakes use a cable and lever system. Over time and use, the cable stretches. If your stroller has a brake cable adjustment screw — usually near the brake lever or at the wheel end — tighten it by a quarter turn and retest. If no adjuster is accessible, the cable may need professional adjustment or replacement.

Every Six Months: Hardware Tightening

Vibration from daily use over uneven surfaces gradually loosens bolts and screws throughout the stroller. Every six months, check and tighten all accessible bolts including wheel axle bolts, handle connector bolts, frame joint bolts, and bumper bar attachment screws.

Use the appropriate tool — usually an Allen key or Phillips screwdriver — and tighten firmly without over-tightening, which can strip threads in aluminium frames.

Annual: Professional Service

Once a year, or before and after heavy travel periods, a professional stroller service ensures everything is in optimal condition. A professional service includes complete mechanism disassembly and cleaning, wheel bearing inspection and replacement if worn, brake system full check and adjustment, fabric integrity assessment, frame inspection for cracks or fatigue, and full lubrication of all moving parts.

This annual service catches developing problems before they become failures during use.
